Royal Ballet chief credits Timothée Chalamet for ticket sales boost
Alex Beard, head of the Royal Ballet and Opera (RBO), has thanked Hollywood actor Timothée Chalamet for sparking a surge in ticket sales after the star's controversial remarks about ballet and opera earlier this year.
Chalamet's remarks spark backlash and engagement
In February, Chalamet told Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas that he didn't want to work in ballet or opera, describing them as art forms that people "no longer care about." His comments, made during a discussion about preserving cinema, drew criticism from performers and institutions worldwide.
Chalamet later clarified his statement, adding, "All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there," but the damage had already been done-along with an unexpected silver lining.
RBO's response: A viral moment and ticket surge
Instead of issuing a formal rebuttal, Beard said the RBO took a lighthearted approach, posting on social media: "Take a look at what we're doing, mate." The institution highlighted that its largest audience demographic is aged 20 to 30, countering Chalamet's claim.
The post went viral, garnering 2.5 million engagements and half a million shares on Instagram alone. More importantly, ticket sales saw an immediate uptick.
"And our ticket sales got an immediate boost. So cheers, Timmy!"

Other institutions seize the moment
The Seattle Opera capitalized on the controversy, launching a promotion for its upcoming production of Carmen. The company offered a discount to ticket buyers who used the promo code "TIMOTHEE," adding a playful jab: "Timmy, you're welcome to use it too."
Beard defends RBO's dynamic pricing model
In an interview with The Times, Beard also addressed the RBO's recent dynamic pricing strategy. He emphasized that the institution does not employ "full-on" dynamic pricing, unlike some high-demand events such as Oasis concerts.
"We don't change prices at all during the priority-booking period or the first couple of weeks of public booking," Beard explained. "All the lower price bands remain constant, and there's a cap on how high top-price tickets can rise."
He added that adjusting the highest ticket prices helps keep lower-priced options affordable for broader audiences.
Looking ahead
As the RBO launches its 14th season at Covent Garden, Beard's focus remains on balancing accessibility with sustainability. The unexpected boost from Chalamet's remarks has only reinforced the institution's belief in its relevance to younger audiences.
