"I wrote this book for myself first," she explains. "To make better decisions, especially as I enter middle age. But also for my parents, to support healthy aging, and for my 10-year-old son-what can I do now to help his brain flourish?"

Critchlow focuses on often-overlooked abilities that underpin innovation, problem-solving, and long-term thinking. Central to these is the capacity to tolerate uncertainty and ambiguity-critical in an era of constant change. She also emphasizes "bioenergetics," or how cellular energy production (via mitochondria) fuels complex cognition.

Emotional intelligence and empathy

Studies show emotional intelligence strongly predicts life satisfaction, relationships, and academic success. While genetics account for 10-45% of these traits, Critchlow cites Stanford psychologist Jamil Zaki's research: self-compassion can cultivate empathy. "Start by asking, *Why am I feeling this emotion?* and *How can I address it?*" she advises. "The effects ripple outward."

The gut-brain connection

A 2023 study by INSEAD's Hilke Plassmann found that volunteers taking pre- and probiotics for seven weeks developed more diverse gut microbiomes-and became significantly more altruistic. Participants were likelier to sacrifice personal gain for fairness. Critchlow explains the mechanism: gut bacteria produce neurotransmitters that influence brain regions like the insula, which processes environmental cues and decision-making.

Critchlow challenges the myth of innate genius. "Neuroscientifically, the difference between Mozart or Ada Lovelace and the rest of us is one of degree," she writes. To harness creativity, she recommends leveraging the 20% of waking hours spent mind-wandering. Activities like walking in nature boost alpha brainwaves, linked to relaxed, innovative thinking. Sleep-particularly the hypnagogic state between wakefulness and rest-also enhances creative insights.

The brain consumes vast energy for complex thought. Critchlow's personal routine targets mitochondrial health: exercise (which stimulates mitochondrial growth), sufficient sleep (to clear metabolic waste), and a diet low in sugar and processed foods. "Mitochondria need the right fuel to generate clean energy," she notes.

Managing overwhelm in a fast-changing world

Critchlow acknowledges the tension between humanity's drive to innovate and its resistance to change. "Our brains struggle with uncertainty, yet as a species, we're wired to explore," she says. Accepting this duality-fear of change alongside curiosity-can ease modern anxieties. "It's part of our natural predisposition."
