Ukraine discloses military death toll amid ongoing peace talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that 55,000 soldiers have been killed in the four-year conflict with Russia, marking the first official update on casualties since December 2024.
Casualty figures and missing persons
In an interview with France 2 TV on Wednesday, Zelensky confirmed the death toll, which rose from 43,000 reported last year. He also acknowledged that a significant number of individuals remain officially missing, though exact figures were not provided.
Ukraine's Interior Ministry previously recorded over 70,000 missing persons-both military and civilian-six months ago, but details on the breakdown were withheld. The true number of deaths may be higher, as the sensitive nature of the data impacts national morale.
Military cemeteries across Ukraine bear witness to the conflict, with graves marked by national flags and engraved images of fallen soldiers. Families of the missing, particularly mothers, continue to search for loved ones, often hoping they are prisoners of war rather than deceased.
Diplomatic efforts in Abu Dhabi
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the latter being former President Donald Trump's son-in-law, held a second day of trilateral talks with Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. The discussions, described as "detailed and productive" by Witkoff, aim to finalize a US-proposed peace deal.
"Significant work remains," Witkoff wrote on X, highlighting the complexity of negotiations.
The most contentious issue remains territorial control, with Russia demanding Ukraine cede the remaining parts of the eastern Donbas region currently outside Moscow's control. Zelensky emphasized that while Ukraine remains "constructive," it seeks "faster results."
Prisoner exchange and military dialogue
As part of the talks, an agreement was reached to exchange 314 prisoners-the first such swap in five months. Witkoff noted that 157 Ukrainians were released, while Russia's Defense Ministry shared images of its returning soldiers.
"Steps like this demonstrate that sustained diplomatic engagement is delivering tangible results," Witkoff stated.
Zelensky pledged to continue efforts to secure the return of all detained Ukrainians. Additionally, the US European Command announced the re-establishment of high-level military-to-military dialogue between Washington and Moscow, suspended since autumn 2021.
Renewed Russian attacks and humanitarian impact
The talks in Abu Dhabi coincided with Russia resuming attacks on Ukraine after a week-long pause requested by Trump amid extreme cold. Temperatures plummeted to -20°C (-4°F), leaving thousands without power or heating as Russia targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
Western intelligence agencies have estimated ongoing weekly casualties on both sides, though these figures remain unverified. Zelensky's disclosure provides a rare official benchmark amid the fog of war.
