Photographer injured during WSL semi-finals in Raglan
The World Surf League (WSL) suspended its New Zealand Pro event on Monday after a photographer suffered injuries from a suspected shark or sea lion attack in the water.
Incident details
The incident occurred during the men's semi-finals in Raglan, on New Zealand's North Island, as Brazilian surfers Yago Dora and Italo Ferreira competed. A 'code red' was declared, pausing the event while medical teams responded.
Australian photographer Ed Sloane sustained small puncture wounds to his left foot and was transported to hospital by ambulance. WSL vice-president of tours and competition, Renato Hickel, confirmed Sloane was in good spirits despite the ordeal.
Uncertainty over attacker
Hickel told the WSL broadcast that it remained unclear whether the attacker was a shark or a sea lion. A doctor at the scene leaned toward the latter, but the situation was described as "very scary" for all involved.
Both surfers witnessed the incident, which contributed to the decision to halt the competition temporarily.
Photographer's statement
Sloane later expressed gratitude for the swift medical response and support from the WSL water patrol.
"I am doing okay, I've had bites to my left foot and am getting medical attention. I love this place and can't wait to watch an epic Finals Day. Cheering for everyone for a great finish to the event."

Event resumes with enhanced safety
The competition resumed after several hours, with additional safety measures in place. These included extra jet skis and a drone spotter to monitor the water for further risks.
The exact species responsible for the attack remains unidentified.
