Tragedy strikes at Lake Marion eatery

A 56-year-old woman was killed when a gust of wind sent a patio umbrella flying into her neck while she dined at a Summerton restaurant on Friday evening.

Details of the incident

Dana Winger of Huger was seated on the outdoor patio of Driftwood Grill with her husband around 19:00 local time on 23 May when sudden severe weather dislodged the umbrella from their table, according to the Clarendon County Coroner's Office. The umbrella struck Winger in the head and neck, leaving her unresponsive.

First responders arrived quickly but were unable to revive her. The coroner's office has classified the death as accidental.

Community and restaurant respond

Driftwood Grill issued a statement on Facebook on Sunday, expressing condolences to Winger's family and acknowledging the broader impact on guests, staff, and first responders.

"Our hearts are with the family, friends, and loved ones affected by the tragic incident during last night's sudden severe weather event at Lake Marion. This has deeply affected many people in our community, including guests, staff, first responders, and everyone involved. Out of respect for the family and those impacted, we ask for continued prayers, compassion, and privacy during this incredibly difficult time."

On Monday, the restaurant shared an update, stating that a grief support team had met with staff and community members to address the emotional toll of the incident.

"Today's support session meant more than words can express to many people who have been emotionally affected by the events of that evening."

Investigation and next steps

Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell confirmed to the BBC that the case is being treated as an accident. An autopsy is scheduled for 27 May to determine the exact cause of death.

The BBC has reached out to Driftwood Grill, the Clarendon County Fire Department, and the Sheriff's Department for further comment but has not yet received a response.
