Leavitt announces birth of daughter
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed the arrival of her second child, a daughter named Viviana, born on May 1, in an Instagram post on Wednesday.
Leavitt described the newborn as "perfect and healthy," adding that her nearly two-year-old son, Nicholas, is adapting well to his new role as a big brother. The family is currently savoring "every moment in our blissful newborn bubble," she wrote.
Maternity leave and briefing coverage
Leavitt, who has served as press secretary since President Donald Trump's return to office in 2025, began her maternity leave in April. However, she briefly resumed duties following the April 24 shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner to provide updates to the press.
During her absence, other administration officials have stepped in to conduct briefings. Secretary of State Marco Rubio filled the role earlier this week, humorously referring to the experience as "chaos" and admitting he struggled to recognize reporters.
Family details and timeline
Viviana, nicknamed "Vivi," is Leavitt's second child with her husband, Nicholas Riccio. Their first child, Nicholas Jr. ("Niko"), will turn two in July.
It remains unclear how long Leavitt will remain on leave before returning to her official duties.
