Actor James Handy found dead after stabbing in Tarzana
The 81-year-old actor, known for roles in Jumanji and Top Gun: Maverick, was discovered with multiple chest wounds in the front garden of his Los Angeles residence on Wednesday, police confirmed.
Suspect arrested at the scene
Michael Gledhill, 44, the son of Handy's girlfriend, was taken into custody on suspicion of murder after allegedly approaching responding officers and identifying himself as the perpetrator.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), a 911 caller stated: "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin." Gledhill was later booked at Van Nuys Jail on one count of murder, with bail set at $2 million (£1.5 million).
Authorities described the incident as isolated, stating there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Handy's career spanned six decades
Born in New York, Handy built a prolific career as a character actor, appearing in over 50 films and television series. Though rarely in leading roles, he became a familiar face in shows such as NYPD Blue, Law & Order, CSI: NY, The West Wing, and The X-Files.
His film credits included Arachnophobia, Logan, and Alias. His final on-screen appearance was in 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, where he played Jimmy, a bartender alongside Jennifer Connelly's character.

The LAPD confirmed Gledhill resides at the Tarzana home with his mother, who is Handy's girlfriend. Detectives continue to gather evidence, though no motive has been disclosed.
