Liverpool suffer heavy FA Cup defeat at Manchester City
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk issued a public apology after his team's 4-0 thrashing by Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, admitting the squad "gave up" during a disastrous second half at the Etihad Stadium.
Collapse in 18-minute spell seals Liverpool's fate
The match remained evenly poised for the first 30 minutes, but Manchester City dismantled Liverpool in a brutal 18-minute stretch around halftime. Erling Haaland opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 39th minute after a foul by Van Dijk on Nico O'Reilly. The Norway striker added two more goals in the second half, completing his hat-trick by the 57th minute, with Antoine Semenyo contributing a third.
Van Dijk: "We let everyone down"
The 34-year-old Dutch defender expressed remorse for the team's performance, particularly the second-half display. "I can only apologize to the fans for what we have shown, especially the second half," Van Dijk said. "The way we played must hurt for everyone. It definitely hurts me."
He acknowledged the team's failure to respond after conceding the third goal, saying, "You shouldn't give up, and that's maybe what happened at a certain point."
Pressure mounts on manager Arne Slot
The defeat intensifies scrutiny on Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who guided the club to the Premier League title in his debut season last year. Van Dijk, however, emphasized collective responsibility. "It's a together thing. He's responsible as the manager, but we are the ones on the pitch," he said.
Liverpool's hopes of silverware this season now rest solely on the Champions League, with a critical quarter-final tie against Paris Saint-Germain looming. The first leg takes place in Paris on Wednesday (20:00 BST), followed by the return leg at Anfield the following Tuesday.
Champions League and Premier League battles ahead
Liverpool currently sit fifth in the Premier League, with a home match against Fulham sandwiched between their Champions League fixtures. Van Dijk stressed the need for a dramatic turnaround in the coming games. "If we want to make something out of this season, we have to produce something special in the next three games," he said.
Reflecting on the team's inconsistent form, he added, "We've been going through this almost 75% of the season. We fall back into games where we get beaten on intensity or how much you really want to go for it."
What's next for Liverpool?
With the FA Cup campaign over, Liverpool must regroup quickly for their Champions League clash against PSG. The team will need to address their defensive frailties and mental resilience to salvage their season.
