Utah woman receives life sentence for husband's poisoning death
A Utah court handed down a life sentence without parole to Kouri Richins, 36, after a jury convicted her of fatally poisoning her husband with a fentanyl-laced drink in 2022.
Motive and financial gain
Prosecutors argued during the trial that Richins stood to gain financially from her husband Eric's death. She had accumulated millions in debt, secured multiple life insurance policies on him, and was involved in an extramarital affair.
Judge Richard Mrazi delivered the sentence on what would have been Eric Richins' 44th birthday, stating, "A person convicted of these crimes is too dangerous to ever be released."
Emotional courtroom statement
Richins, who did not testify during her trial, addressed her three children for about 30 minutes in court. According to CBS News, she told them, "I know today you don't want to speak to me and you hate me. That's OK. When you are ready, I will be here for you."
Additional convictions and prior attempt
The jury also found Richins guilty of fraud for claiming insurance benefits after her husband's death. Prosecutors revealed she mistakenly believed she would inherit his $4 million estate.
She was further convicted of attempted murder for an earlier incident in which she poisoned her husband's sandwich.
Book published amid investigation
Richins was arrested in March 2023, two months after releasing a children's book titled Are You With Me?, which she described as a tool to help families cope with grief. In a pre-arrest interview with radio station KPCW, she said, "We wrote this book hoping it would bring comfort to our family and others facing similar loss."
The book was dedicated to her husband, whom she called "my amazing husband and a wonderful father."
