Verdict reached in Utah poisoning case
A Utah jury found Kouri Richins guilty on Monday of killing her husband by lacing his drink with fentanyl, concluding a trial that lasted several weeks.
After roughly three hours of deliberation, the panel convicted the 35-year-old on charges including aggravated murder, attempted murder, and insurance fraud. The most severe charge carries a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
Financial motives and infidelity revealed
Prosecutors presented evidence that Richins had accumulated significant debt and taken out multiple life insurance policies on her husband, Eric Richins. They also alleged she was involved in an extramarital affair and planned a future with another man.
Summit County prosecutor Brad Bloodworth stated, "She wanted to leave Eric Richins but did not want to leave his money."
Timeline of alleged poisoning
Court documents revealed that between December 2021 and February 2022, Richins contacted a person with a prior drug arrest to obtain prescription painkillers. She later requested fentanyl, referring to it as "some of the Michael Jackson stuff."
On Valentine's Day 2022, Eric Richins fell ill after dinner. He later told a friend he suspected his wife was trying to poison him. Prosecutors said Richins acquired more fentanyl two weeks later.
On March 4, 2022, she called emergency services after finding her husband unresponsive. Authorities determined he had ingested five times the lethal dose of fentanyl.
Attempted murder and fraud charges
Richins was also convicted of attempting to kill her husband in an earlier incident by poisoning his sandwich. Additionally, she was found guilty of fraudulently claiming insurance benefits following his death.
Prosecutors argued she believed she would inherit his $4 million estate, though the claims were later disputed.
Book published amid legal troubles
Richins was arrested in March 2023, two months after releasing a children's book titled Are You With Me?, which she described as a tool to help families cope with grief.
"We wrote this book and we're really hoping that it provides some comfort for not just obviously, our family, but other families that are going through the same thing."

The book was dedicated to her husband, whom she called "my amazing husband and a wonderful father."
Defense rests without testimony
Richins pleaded not guilty to all charges. Her legal team did not call any witnesses, including Richins herself, and rested their case without presenting a defense.
