Usha Vance announces pregnancy with fourth child

Usha Vance, wife of U.S. Vice President JD Vance, revealed on Tuesday that she is expecting a baby boy in late July, making her the first second lady to have a child while serving in the role.

Family and background

The Vances, who currently have three young children-Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel-shared the news via a statement on Usha Vance's social media account, confirming both she and the baby are healthy.

Born Usha Chilukuri in San Diego to Indian immigrant parents-a mechanical engineer father and a molecular biologist mother-she grew up in a working-class neighborhood before attending Yale Law School, where she met JD Vance in 2010.

Legal career and political transition

Prior to becoming second lady, Usha Vance built a career in corporate law, working as a litigator at Munger, Tolles & Olson in San Francisco. She also clerked for prominent conservative judges, including Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and then-appeals court judge Brett Kavanaugh before his elevation to the Supreme Court.

Historical context

While first ladies have given birth during their husbands' presidencies-most notably Frances Cleveland, who had a daughter in the White House in 1893-Usha Vance will be the first second lady to welcome a child while in office.

JD Vance's stance on birth rates

The vice president has been a vocal advocate for increasing birth rates in the U.S. In 2025, he stated, "Let me say very simply: I want more babies in the United States of America."

With the arrival of their fourth child, the Vances will further align with this perspective.
