US announces troop withdrawal from Germany
The Pentagon revealed plans on Friday to reduce its military presence in Germany by 5,000 troops, citing a strategic review of forces in Europe. The move follows escalating public disputes between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the conflict with Iran.
Diplomatic friction fuels decision
Tensions between Washington and Berlin have intensified after Merz accused the US of lacking a clear strategy in negotiations with Iran. Speaking to university students earlier this week, Merz stated that Iranian diplomats had outmaneuvered American negotiators, describing the situation as a national humiliation.
Trump retaliated on Thursday via Truth Social, calling Merz's leadership ineffective and suggesting Germany was struggling economically. He also implied that Germany's stance on Iran's nuclear ambitions was dangerously naive, writing, "No wonder Germany is doing so poorly, both Economically, and otherwise!"
Pentagon cites operational needs
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the withdrawal order came from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He described the decision as part of a broader assessment of US force posture in Europe, aligned with "theater requirements and conditions on the ground."
The reduction is expected to unfold over the next six to twelve months. Germany currently hosts over 36,000 US troops, the largest American deployment in Europe.
Trump threatens further troop cuts
When asked about potential withdrawals from Italy and Spain, Trump indicated he was considering similar moves. "I probably will-look, why shouldn't I?" he said, criticizing both countries for refusing to support US efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
"Italy has not been of any help to us, and Spain has been horrible," he added, referencing their reluctance to engage in the Iran conflict.
Germany's defense spending rises amid criticism
Trump has long criticized NATO allies for failing to meet the alliance's defense spending target of 2% of GDP. However, Germany's military budget has surged under Merz's leadership, with projected spending reaching €105.8 billion (£91 billion) in 2027-equivalent to 3.1% of GDP next year.
The US previously attempted to relocate 12,000 troops from Germany in 2020, but Congress blocked the plan. President Joe Biden later reversed the decision.
Regional reactions and broader implications
The troop reduction in Germany follows a similar drawdown in Romania last year, part of Trump's stated goal to shift US military focus toward the Indo-Pacific. Romania's defense minister disclosed that the move came after Hegseth urged the country to bolster its own defenses.
Eastern European nations, particularly those bordering Russia, have expressed unease over the withdrawals. Some Republican lawmakers have also opposed the reductions, warning they could weaken NATO's eastern flank.
The German embassy in Washington has not yet responded to requests for comment.
