Judge blocks detention of British digital rights advocate
A US federal judge has temporarily prevented the detention of Imran Ahmed, founder of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, after he challenged the revocation of his visa. The decision allows Ahmed, a US permanent resident, to remain with his American family while his case proceeds.
Background of the visa revocation
Ahmed was one of five individuals denied entry to the US under the previous administration, which accused them of attempting to pressure tech companies into suppressing free speech. The move sparked criticism from European leaders, who defended organizations monitoring online content.
US Senator Marco Rubio claimed the group had orchestrated efforts to push platforms to censor and "punish American viewpoints they oppose."
Legal challenge and court ruling
Ahmed filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against officials, including Rubio and Attorney General Pamela Bondi, over the sanctions. On Thursday, US District Judge Vernon S. Broderick granted a temporary restraining order, blocking authorities from detaining Ahmed before his case is heard.
The US State Department and White House have not yet responded to requests for comment. However, a State Department spokesperson told AFP that "the Supreme Court and Congress have made clear: the US is not obligated to allow foreign nationals to enter or reside in the country."
Ahmed's response and legal arguments
"I will not be bullied away from my life's work of fighting to keep children safe from social media's harm and stopping antisemitism online."

His lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, called the judge's swift decision significant, stating: "The federal government can't deport a green card holder like Imran Ahmed-who has an American wife and young child-simply because it disagrees with his views."
Previous legal battles
In 2023, Ahmed's organization was sued by Elon Musk's social media company, X (formerly Twitter), after reporting an increase in hate speech following Musk's acquisition. While the case was dismissed, an appeal remains pending.
Next steps
The temporary restraining order ensures Ahmed's case will be reviewed in court before any further action is taken. The State Department has not indicated whether it will contest the ruling.
