Veteran succumbs to injuries after daytime attack
Kerry George Sheron, a 69-year-old US Army veteran, died in a hospital four days after being assaulted outside his Escondido, California, home on May 20. Police confirmed the attack occurred in broad daylight, leaving an intervening bystander also injured.
Suspect arrested, charges pending
Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, was taken into custody blocks from the scene after allegedly fleeing on foot. He faces charges of attempted murder, elder abuse, criminal threats, and battery but has pleaded not guilty. Authorities indicated charges may be revised following Sheron's death.
Butler, held without bail, appeared in court on May 23. His next hearing is scheduled for June 3. The San Diego County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the case for potential amendments to the charges.

Escondido police responded to the assault report at 2:00 PM local time. Sheron was found with severe injuries and rushed to a hospital in critical condition. The medical examiner has yet to determine the official cause of death.
Deputy District Attorney Ross Garcia described the attack as unprovoked, involving a single punch to Sheron's jaw followed by additional blows to his head. Detectives are examining all potential motives, including whether the assault was politically motivated, though no evidence currently supports this theory.
Community mourns decorated veteran
Friends and neighbors gathered outside Sheron's home on Monday, displaying flags and signs in his memory. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Sheron's property had long featured US flags, military insignia, and pro-Trump signs, despite prior vandalism.
"Kerry was a Trump supporter, but he was a patriot first. He believed in freedom of speech for everyone," said longtime friend Jim Gillie.
Sheron's wife of 20 years told CBS 8 she believed the yard's political displays may have played a role in the attack, though she confirmed her husband and the suspect were strangers.
Family launches fundraiser for expenses
An online fundraiser for Sheron's family has raised over $47,000 to cover funeral costs, travel, and immediate needs. The family described his death as a "heartbreaking tragedy" that has left them devastated.
Butler's friends told US media he suffered from severe PTSD and paranoia after his service in the US Navy, though police have not confirmed this as a factor in the assault.
