Ultra-narrow Welsh cottage fetches nearly double guide price

A one-bedroom home in Pentre, south Wales, measuring just 7.5 feet at its widest point, sold for £44,999 at auction after attracting 35 bids-nearly twice its £23,000 starting price.

Compact but complete

The property on Llewellyn Street includes all standard rooms: a hallway, fitted kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. Modern upgrades such as UPVC double glazing, a garage, and a garden-where residents can stretch out lengthwise-were part of the appeal.

Wales' reputation for tiny homes

This isn't the only unusually narrow property in Wales. In Conwy, a 16th-century house measuring just 6 feet wide and 10 feet high holds the title of Britain's smallest. Once rented by a 6-foot-tall fisherman, it was deemed uninhabitable in 1900 and later became a tourist attraction. Closed during the pandemic, visitors could only view it from the outside.

England's slimmest contender

London's narrowest house, a Victorian property in Shepherd's Bush, spans just 1.6 meters (5.2 feet) in width. Despite its size, it remains a residential property, competing with Wales' record-holding homes for the title of Britain's skinniest.

Why the demand?

Estate agents suggest the combination of affordability, location, and quirky charm drove the high interest. With housing shortages and rising prices, compact properties offer a budget-friendly alternative in sought-after areas.
