Ukraine's evolving air defences save lives amid relentless Russian strikes

Kyiv buried two young sisters this week as air raid sirens echoed through the city, a grim reminder of the human toll from Russia's largest aerial assault on Ukraine to date. Liubava, 12, and Vira, 17, were among 24 civilians killed when a Russian missile demolished their apartment building earlier this month. Their mother, now the family's sole survivor, mourns both daughters and her husband, who died fighting on the front lines.

Unprecedented barrage tests Ukraine's defences

Over a 48-hour period, Russia launched 1,500 drones and 56 missiles at Ukrainian targets, marking the most sustained aerial campaign since the full-scale invasion began. Ukrainian air defences intercepted 94% of the long-range drones and 73% of the missiles, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Just days earlier, on 14 May 2026, Kyiv's forces had downed only 55% of incoming drones nationwide, highlighting rapid improvements in Ukraine's defensive capabilities.

From Soviet relics to cutting-edge innovation

Ukraine's air defence network has transformed since 2022, evolving from outdated Soviet-era systems to a multi-layered, high-tech shield. Western allies provided advanced systems like Patriot missiles, but Ukraine has also developed its own solutions. Lt Col Yuriy Myronenko, an inspector general at the Ministry of Defence, acknowledged the progress: "We are now, unfortunately, the best in the world." However, he noted that intercepting Russia's ballistic missiles remains a significant challenge.

AI and drones: The backbone of Ukraine's defences

At the heart of Ukraine's air defence strategy is Sky Map, a software system that integrates radars, sensors, and AI to track and neutralise threats. Initially relying on mobile phones mounted on telegraph poles to detect drones, the system now employs thousands of advanced sensors. The U.S. has even adopted Sky Map to protect one of its Middle Eastern bases.

Cheap, mass-produced interceptor drones have become a game-changer. Ukraine now manufactures over 1,000 of these bullet-shaped, quadcopter drones daily. In March 2026 alone, they destroyed more than 30,000 Russian drones. Near Kherson, the Marine Corps' Unmanned Systems Regiment demonstrated the P1-SUN interceptor, a 3D-printed drone capable of speeds exceeding 300 km/h (186 mph) and a 30 km range. Costing just $1,000 (£750), it is designed to counter Russia's $50,000 Shahed attack drones.

Private sector steps up to fill gaps

With state resources stretched thin, private companies are playing a critical role in bolstering Ukraine's air defences. Twenty-five firms have joined a government initiative to protect infrastructure, motivated by the need to safeguard their own facilities. Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy grid last winter left millions without power, underscoring the urgency of the effort.

One such company, Carmine Sky, operates a network of remotely controlled machine gun towers in the Kharkiv region, near the Russian border. In a basement control room, civilian operators-including mothers, taxi drivers, and veterans-monitor Sky Map's real-time tracking of Russian drones and jets. Ruslan, the company's spokesman, compared the work to playing a video game: "It's like an Xbox or PlayStation." While the private sector can scale faster than the public sector, Ruslan emphasised that all operations follow military commands to maintain coordination.

Escalating innovation race amid persistent vulnerabilities

Both Ukraine and Russia are locked in a race to out-innovate each other. Russia has introduced faster jet-powered drones and decoy drones to locate Ukrainian air defences. Meanwhile, Ukraine has intensified strikes on Russian soil, targeting oil refineries and major cities like St. Petersburg and Moscow. These attacks led the Kremlin to scale back its World War Two Victory Day parade in May, fearing further Ukrainian strikes.

Despite these advances, significant gaps remain. Ukraine still lacks sufficient high-end missile interceptors, particularly U.S.-made Patriots, which are the only effective defence against Russian ballistic missiles. The ongoing U.S. conflict with Iran has further strained supplies. Near the front lines, small first-person-view (FPV) drones continue to cause most casualties, with both sides struggling to counter them effectively. Even with high-tech solutions, low-tech measures like roadside nets and shotguns remain a last line of defence.

A war of attrition with no end in sight

President Zelensky has warned that Russia's strategy of overwhelming Ukraine's air defences with mass attacks is designed to ensure some missiles and drones penetrate the shield. The tragic deaths of Liubava and Vira serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of this relentless aerial campaign. As both sides push the boundaries of innovation, the war's toll continues to rise, with no immediate resolution in sight.
