Government unveils largest workforce training initiative since 1971

The UK government has launched a nationwide program offering free and subsidised artificial intelligence (AI) training courses, aiming to equip 10 million workers with essential skills by 2030. Officials describe the scheme as the most ambitious since the Open University's founding over five decades ago.

Courses focus on practical AI applications in the workplace

The online lessons cover topics such as crafting effective prompts for chatbots and using AI tools for administrative tasks. While many courses are free, some require payment. Participants who complete the training receive a digital badge.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall emphasised the government's goal of ensuring workers feel confident integrating AI into their roles. "We want AI to work for Britain, and that means ensuring Britons can work with AI," she said. "Change is inevitable, but the consequences of change are not. We will protect people from the risks of AI while ensuring everyone can share in its benefits."

Critics argue training must go beyond technical skills

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) cautioned that the program risks oversimplifying the skills needed for an AI-driven workforce. Roa Powell, a senior research fellow at the IPPR, stated, "Skills for the age of AI can't be reduced to short technical courses alone. Workers also need support to build judgement, critical thinking, physical skills, leadership, and the confidence to use these tools safely."

Major organisations and tech firms back the initiative

Tech giants including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft collaborated on designing the 14 available courses. The NHS, the British Chambers of Commerce, and the Local Government Association have pledged to encourage their staff and members to participate.

Sharron Gunn, head of BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, welcomed the initiative but stressed that responsibility should not fall solely on workers. "Alongside dedicated AI professionals, UK businesses need their teams to have a benchmarked level of AI skills," she said. "We also need far greater understanding of technology at board level, so those involved in governance can scrutinise executive decisions with confidence."

Course details and accessibility

The training is open to all UK adults, with lesson durations ranging from 20 minutes to several hours. While some courses are free, others are behind paywalls. The government has not disclosed the exact number of free versus paid options.
