Updated 14 February 2026 - UK and European allies release findings from forensic analysis.

Toxin linked to dart frog identified in Navalny's remains

The United Kingdom and its European partners have concluded that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was killed using epibatidine, a lethal compound derived from a South American dart frog, according to material recovered from his body.

The UK Foreign Office stated that no plausible alternative explanation exists for the presence of the toxin, which does not occur naturally in Russia and is not produced by dart frogs in captivity.

Allies accuse Russian state of responsibility

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, addressing the Munich Security Conference, asserted that only the Russian government possessed the capability, motive, and opportunity to administer the poison during Navalny's imprisonment.

"Russia viewed Navalny as a threat. By employing this poison, the state revealed both the ruthless methods at its disposal and its profound fear of political dissent,"

Yvette Cooper, UK Foreign Secretary

A joint statement issued by Britain, Sweden, France, Germany, and the Netherlands echoed Cooper's remarks, holding the Kremlin directly accountable for Navalny's death in a Siberian penal colony.

Chemical weapons treaty violation alleged

The UK has formally notified the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons of an alleged breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention by Russia.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot paid tribute to Navalny, describing him as a figure "killed for advocating a free and democratic Russia."

Navalny's widow welcomes findings

Yulia Navalnaya, who met with Cooper in Munich, expressed gratitude for the two-year investigation that confirmed her long-held belief that her husband was murdered.

"From the first day, I was certain he had been poisoned. Now there is proof. I thank the European nations for their thorough work and for revealing the truth."

Yulia Navalnaya

In September 2025, Navalnaya disclosed that laboratories in two unidentified countries had analyzed smuggled biological samples, concluding Navalny was "murdered." She urged the labs to publish their results but did not specify the toxin at the time.

Navalny's final months and Kremlin silence

Navalny, a prominent anti-corruption activist and Russia's most vocal opposition leader, died suddenly on 16 February 2024 at age 47 while serving a prison sentence in an Arctic penal colony. He had been incarcerated for three years on charges widely regarded as politically motivated.

Russian authorities reported that Navalny collapsed during a walk at the facility after complaining of feeling unwell. He never regained consciousness.

President Vladimir Putin, who avoided mentioning Navalny by name during his lifetime, briefly acknowledged his death a month later, calling it "a sad event." The Kremlin has not responded to the latest allegations.

Previous poisoning and imprisonment

In 2020, Navalny survived an assassination attempt involving Novichok, a military-grade nerve agent. After receiving treatment in Germany, he was arrested upon returning to Russia and subsequently transferred to the remote Arctic penal colony where he died.
