Two dead after vehicle strikes pedestrians in Leipzig
Two people died and 22 others were injured on Monday when a car drove into a busy shopping street in Leipzig, eastern Germany, authorities confirmed. The 33-year-old German driver was detained at the scene, though officials said his motive remains unclear.

Police spokesperson Susanne Luebcke stated the vehicle sped through the pedestrian zone, striking multiple people before stopping. Two fatalities-a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, both German citizens-were confirmed by prosecutors.

The arrested man, identified as a Leipzig resident with a history of mental illness, is being investigated for murder and attempted murder. Saxony state premier Michael Kretschmer noted the suspect's prior psychological issues but emphasized no evidence suggests a political or religious motive. One witness, Susi, told Radio Leipzig she heard a loud crash while sitting on a bench. "The car was going *really* fast," she said. She and a friend took cover in a nearby jewelry store before seeing injured victims on the ground. Another witness reported the car stopped at bollards, with a woman falling from its roof. Bystanders attempted to restrain the driver through an open window until police arrived and secured him with cable ties.
