Turkey secures Formula 1 return after six-year absence
Istanbul Park will host the Turkish Grand Prix from 2027 through at least 2031, Formula 1 officials confirmed on Friday. The circuit last appeared on the calendar in 2021 during the pandemic-driven expansion.
Historic significance of Istanbul Park
The track holds special significance as the site where Lewis Hamilton secured his record-equalling seventh world drivers' championship in 2020. Turkey previously hosted Formula 1 races from 2005 to 2011 before returning briefly in 2020 and 2021.
Calendar impact and rotational model
The addition of Turkey does not increase the total number of races beyond the current 24-event limit. Instead, the Turkish Grand Prix will replace existing contracts as they expire or shift to a rotational basis with other venues. For example, Belgium recently agreed to a new deal that includes four races between 2026 and 2031.
Political and commercial backing
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hailed the return as a vote of confidence in the country's organizational capabilities and infrastructure. He noted that Formula 1 reaches nearly 19 million people in Turkey, with around 7.5 million actively following the sport on social media.

F1 President Stefano Domenicali expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting Istanbul's unique position as a cultural bridge between Europe and Asia. He described the city as a dynamic hub for sport, business, and entertainment, with Istanbul Park offering one of the most challenging and exciting circuits on the calendar.
