TSA agents to receive $10,000 bonuses after US government shutdown

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Friday that Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents who worked through the 43-day US government shutdown will receive $10,000 (£7,581) bonuses, in addition to backpay, for their "exemplary service." The announcement came during a visit to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas, where Noem distributed the first bonus checks to nearly two dozen agents.

Eligibility and funding

The exact criteria for eligibility remain unclear, though Noem emphasized that the bonuses will go to those who "stepped up, took on extra shifts," and maintained operations during the shutdown. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will review each case individually, she added. Funding for the bonuses will come from carryover funds from fiscal year 2025 and savings from reduced contract spending.

Impact on air travel

The shutdown, which lasted from October 1 to November 13, caused widespread disruptions in US air travel. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) restricted flights last week due to staffing shortages, particularly among air traffic controllers, many of whom called in sick or sought alternative employment to cope with unpaid work. TSA agents faced similar hardships, with tens of thousands-from administrators to frontline screeners-working unpaid or taking extra shifts to cover gaps.

Recognition and broader implications

Noem praised the agents as "examples to the rest" for enduring financial strain while ensuring public safety. President Donald Trump previously suggested similar bonuses for air traffic controllers who remained on duty. The shutdown ended Wednesday after Congress resolved a funding deadlock, but its ripple effects-including delayed pay, operational strain, and morale challenges-continue to unfold across federal agencies.

"These individuals upheld the mission of DHS and showed up each and every day to serve Americans," Noem said, calling their dedication "unwavering."
