Trump names Oklahoma Senator to lead Homeland Security
President Donald Trump has selected Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma to replace Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security. The appointment requires Senate confirmation.
Mullin's background and stance on immigration
A former mixed martial arts fighter, Mullin has been a staunch ally of Trump since entering the Senate in 2023. He has praised the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) efforts to detain undocumented immigrants, a cornerstone of the administration's policy.
Speaking to reporters outside the Capitol, Mullin emphasized his commitment to enforcing laws passed by Congress, regardless of political opposition. "Once I make that transition, my focus is to keep the homeland secure," he said.
Controversies and confrontational style
Mullin's fiery personality has drawn attention, including a 2023 incident where he challenged Teamsters Union President Sean O'Brien to a physical fight during a Senate hearing. The confrontation escalated after O'Brien criticized Mullin on social media, calling him a "greedy CEO who pretends like he's self-made."
Mullin responded by standing up during the hearing and removing his wedding ring, offering to settle the dispute outside. The exchange highlighted his combative approach, which has been a recurring theme in his public appearances.
Challenges ahead at DHS
If confirmed, Mullin will inherit an agency facing scrutiny, particularly after two U.S. citizens were killed by federal immigration officials in Minnesota. He has defended Homeland Security's policies, calling ICE agents "patriots" who face death threats while performing a difficult job.
Mullin has also criticized the partial government shutdown, accusing Democrats of political theater for allowing DHS funding to lapse. "They're not stopping ICE from doing their job," he told CNN last month.
Personal and professional history
Before his Senate tenure, Mullin and his wife built a plumbing business over two decades. A father of six, he was sworn into office in 2023. His appointment marks the second change in leadership at DHS during Trump's second term.
