Trump selects Coast Guard admiral to lead CDC

US President Donald Trump has nominated Rear Admiral Erica Schwartz to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), filling a vacancy that has lasted several months. Schwartz, a physician and attorney, previously served as Trump's deputy surgeon general during his first term.

Background of the CDC leadership gap

The CDC has operated without a Senate-confirmed director since Susan Monarez was removed from the role in September. Monarez's departure followed a public dispute with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over vaccine policy changes, which she criticized in a Wall Street Journal op-ed as politically motivated.

Since Monarez's exit, National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya has led the CDC on an interim basis.

Schwartz's career and credentials

Schwartz brings 24 years of experience in the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, where she rose to the rank of rear admiral. She holds a medical degree from Brown University and a law degree from the University of Maryland.

After leaving government service following Trump's first term, Schwartz was not retained by the Biden administration for the acting surgeon general role.

Controversy and past nominations

Trump's initial choice to lead the CDC, former Florida Congressman Dave Weldon-a vocal vaccine critic-was withdrawn after facing opposition in the Senate. Monarez, who ultimately took the role, served for less than a month before her ouster.

Under Kennedy's leadership, the CDC has undergone significant restructuring, including mass firings and policy shifts that have drawn criticism from scientists and former staff. In March, a federal judge blocked several of Kennedy's vaccine-related changes from taking effect.

Trump's announcement

"It is my honor to nominate the incredibly talented Dr. Erica Schwartz, MD, JD, MPH, as my Director of the CDC. She is a star!"

Next steps

Schwartz's nomination will now proceed to the Senate for confirmation. If approved, she will assume leadership of an agency that has faced internal turmoil and external scrutiny over its recent policy decisions.
