Trump pushes for federal oversight of elections

Former US President Donald Trump has renewed his call for Republicans to take control of election administration, suggesting federal intervention in at least 15 unspecified locations. In a recent podcast interview, Trump reiterated his debunked claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

Podcast remarks spark controversy

Speaking on Dan Bongino's podcast, Trump argued that Republicans should "nationalise the voting" to secure future electoral victories. He linked this proposal to his immigration agenda, stating that failure to deport undocumented immigrants would doom Republican prospects in future elections.

When pressed for details, Trump did not specify which 15 jurisdictions he believed should come under federal oversight. The US electoral system is traditionally managed at the state and local levels, with no precedent for such a takeover.

FBI raid in Georgia fuels tensions

Trump's comments follow an FBI raid on Georgia's Fulton County Election Hub, where agents examined 2020 voting records under a court-authorized warrant. The operation drew criticism from local officials, including Fulton County Commissioner Mo Ivory, who called it "an assault on your vote."

Fulton County, where Trump narrowly lost to President Joe Biden in 2020, has been a focal point of his fraud allegations. Despite multiple investigations-including two criminal indictments against Trump-no evidence has substantiated his claims of a stolen election.

Intelligence official confirms role in raid

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard disclosed her presence during the FBI's operation in a letter to senators. She stated that her involvement was part of her statutory authority to oversee election security, including counterintelligence and cybersecurity threats.

Gabbard also confirmed a phone call between Trump and FBI agents at the scene, which she facilitated. According to her account, Trump thanked the agents without asking questions or issuing directives-a rare interaction between a president and active law enforcement personnel.

Reactions and next steps

Legal experts note that Trump's proposal to federalize elections would face significant constitutional hurdles. Meanwhile, Fulton County officials continue to cooperate with the FBI's review, though the scope of the investigation remains unclear.
