Trump endorses Republican candidate in California governor race
US President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind Steve Hilton, a former adviser to UK Prime Minister David Cameron, in California's upcoming gubernatorial primary. The endorsement adds a new layer of unpredictability to a race already marked by a crowded field and Democratic divisions.
Hilton's background and campaign platform
Hilton, a Republican, previously served as a top aide to Cameron from 2010 to 2012 before relocating to the United States. He later became a Fox News host and remains a contributor to the network. Now a visiting scholar at Stanford University, Hilton obtained US citizenship in 2019 and is running for governor on promises to reduce taxes, trim the state budget, and lower housing costs for families.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Hilton called Trump's endorsement a "deep honor," though political analysts suggest the backing could complicate his chances in the deeply Democratic-leaning state.
A race with high stakes and unusual dynamics
California's 2 June primary operates under a "jungle primary" system, where the top two vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation. With 10 candidates in the running-including eight Democrats-Republicans see an opening to compete in a state where they haven't won a statewide election in 20 years.
Trump's endorsement of Hilton, however, could split the Republican vote. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is also vying for the GOP nomination, and Trump's backing may edge him out, potentially clearing a path for a Democrat to secure one of the top two spots.
Polling shifts and Democratic concerns
A March survey by the University of California, Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies sent shockwaves through the state's political establishment. The poll showed Hilton and Bianco leading the Democratic contenders, a scenario that has alarmed party leaders. In response, top Democratic officials have urged some candidates to withdraw to consolidate support.
Among the Democrats, Congressman Eric Swalwell, former Congresswoman Katie Porter, and billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer have emerged as the frontrunners in the crowded field.
Trump's critique of California's Democratic leadership
In his Truth Social post, Trump framed his endorsement of Hilton as a response to what he described as the "horrendous job" Democrats have done in California. The president claimed residents are "fleeing" the state, a narrative Hilton has echoed in his campaign.
"Democrats have done an absolutely horrendous job in California. People are fleeing the state, and it's time for a change," Trump wrote.
What's next for the race
The primary on 2 June will determine which two candidates advance to the November general election. With Trump's endorsement now in play, Hilton's campaign gains momentum, but the long-term impact on the race remains uncertain in a state where Democratic voters hold a significant advantage.
