Fuller secures Georgia's 14th District in runoff vote
Republican Clay Fuller is projected to have won Tuesday's runoff election in Georgia's 14th Congressional District, filling the seat vacated by former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene earlier this year.
Race background and results
Fuller, a lieutenant colonel in the Georgia Air National Guard and former White House fellow during Donald Trump's first term, defeated Democrat Shawn Harris in the runoff. The contest became necessary after no candidate secured a majority in the March 10 special election, where Harris narrowly outperformed Fuller amid a crowded Republican field.
CBS News, the BBC's U.S. partner, called the race for Fuller on Tuesday night. His victory preserves the district's strong Republican lean and bolsters the GOP's fragile 217-214 majority in the House of Representatives.
Trump's influence looms large
Fuller credited Trump's endorsement as the decisive factor in his win. In an interview with Fox News on election night, he called the endorsement "the key factor" and "the honor of my lifetime."
"He was the difference-maker. He made all the difference in the world."
Clay Fuller, Republican candidate
Trump amplified his support for Fuller in a social media post on Monday, urging Republicans and "MAGA Warriors" to vote for the candidate, whom he described as having his "Complete and Total Endorsement."
Political analysts viewed the race as a test of Trump's continued sway over the Republican base ahead of the November midterms. Andra Gillespie, a political science professor at Emory University, noted that Trump's strategy aimed to avoid alienating moderate voters while energizing his core supporters.
Democrats' uphill battle
Harris, who had hoped to capitalize on low turnout in the off-cycle runoff, acknowledged the loss but signaled his intent to run again in November. In a social media post, he stated, "This wasn't the result we wanted, but the message is clear - people here are ready for leadership that puts them first. The fight continues. On to November!"
The Democratic Party had targeted the seat as a potential pickup, with former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg holding a town hall with Harris in March. However, Gillespie emphasized that Harris faced long odds, requiring multiple factors to align in his favor.
District dynamics and future challenges
Georgia's 14th District spans the state's northwest, stretching from the Atlanta suburbs to the Tennessee border. While predominantly rural and Republican, it includes Democratic-leaning pockets near Atlanta and the city of Rome.
Fuller, who will serve the remainder of Greene's term until January, must immediately pivot to campaigning for the November midterms to retain the seat. Harris has already indicated he plans to challenge Fuller again, setting the stage for a potential rematch.
Fuller's platform aligns closely with Trump's agenda, particularly on issues like immigration enforcement and mass deportations. His victory underscores the former president's enduring influence within the party as Republicans seek to maintain their slim House majority.
