Grenell exits Kennedy Center amid artist exodus and renovations
Ric Grenell, a longtime associate of former US President Donald Trump, is leaving his post as leader of the Kennedy Center following a contentious year marked by sweeping changes, departing performers, and declining ticket sales.
Trump announces successor with construction background
Trump revealed on Truth Social that Matt Floca, the center's vice-president of facilities operations, will replace Grenell. Floca, who joined the institution in January 2024 during the Biden administration, has a background in construction and facilities management, according to a Kennedy Center statement.
Once the board of directors confirms his appointment, Floca will oversee a two-year, $250 million renovation set to begin in July. Trump has repeatedly criticized the center's physical condition and secured federal funding for the overhaul.
Center renamed after Trump amid legal controversy
After reclaiming the presidency in 2025, Trump installed himself as chairman of the Kennedy Center in February. The board, reshuffled with Trump allies after several members were dismissed, voted to rename the venue the Donald J Trump and the John F Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts in December. New signage was installed the following day.
Legal experts and lawmakers have argued that the 1964 law establishing the center's name requires congressional approval for any changes. Critics contend the renaming bypassed legislative oversight.
Programming shifts spark backlash
Under Grenell's leadership, the center faced criticism for its programming direction, which Trump described as overly "woke." Several high-profile acts canceled performances, including the Hamilton cast, composer Steven Schwartz of Wicked, and the dance troupe Doug Varone and Dancers.
"Ric Grenell has done an excellent job in helping to coordinate various elements of the Center during the transition period, and I want to thank him for the outstanding work he has done,"

Renovation plans draw praise and scrutiny
Trump hailed the upcoming renovations as transformative, writing on Truth Social that the Trump Kennedy Center will become "the finest facility of its kind anywhere in the World." The project is one of several infrastructure upgrades the administration has prioritized during Trump's second term.
Floca's appointment signals a shift toward operational execution, with the center preparing to close for the duration of the overhaul. Board confirmation is expected in the coming weeks.
