Tourists stranded as police target gang members in Rio favela

Approximately 200 visitors found themselves trapped at the summit of Morro Dois Irmãos on Tuesday morning after law enforcement launched an operation in the Vidigal neighborhood, local media reported.

Operation details

Officers from Rio de Janeiro's Polícia Civil, joined by counterparts from Bahia's Public Prosecutor's Office, moved into Vidigal to apprehend suspected members of the Comando Vermelho criminal organization. Authorities believed the individuals were hiding in the area, according to TV Globo.

Gunfire erupted as police encountered resistance, blocking the primary route to the Morro Dois Irmãos trail-a popular vantage point overlooking Ipanema Beach. The exchange left tourists stranded at the top.

Tourists describe tense moments

Portuguese visitor Matilda Oliveiro, who was waiting for sunrise with her sister Rita, recounted how guides abruptly instructed the group to sit down as shots rang out. "We had been waiting for the sunrise when suddenly the guides asked us to sit. Then we heard gunfire," she told TV Globo.

Oliveiro noted that police presence was visible earlier, and the situation appeared managed. "They handled it well. It was frightening, but everything stayed under control."

"We were already at the summit when the gunshots started. The guides immediately explained what was happening."

Danielly Nobre, tourist

Nobre, 25, told O Dia that guides reassured the group, and a police helicopter later signaled for calm. "In the end, it all worked out. We descended in single file, helping each other. We still saw the sunrise and got an adrenaline rush," she said.

Guides coordinated with authorities

Rita Oliveiro confirmed that guides had prior knowledge of the operation. Other local guides told TV Globo they routinely coordinate with police units active in Vidigal.

The stranded tourists were able to descend after roughly 30 minutes, according to reports.

Gang control in Vidigal

Comando Vermelho and similar groups enforce strict rules in territories they dominate. These organizations have expanded beyond drug trafficking to monopolize essential services, including gas, cable television, internet, and transportation.
