Russian authorities reported three fatalities overnight after Ukrainian drones targeted the Moscow region, marking one of the deadliest such attacks in recent months. The strikes injured at least 16 people and damaged residential areas and energy infrastructure.
Casualties and damage in Moscow region
Regional governor Andrei Vorobyev confirmed a woman died in Khimki, north of Moscow, after a drone struck her home, trapping a person under debris. Two additional deaths-a man and a woman-occurred in the village of Pogorelki. Vorobyev stated that air defenses had been active since 3:00 AM local time, intercepting a large-scale drone assault.
Four others sustained injuries, and multiple houses were damaged. In Subbotino, southwest of Moscow, a private residence caught fire following the attack.
Energy infrastructure targeted
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported 12 injuries after drones hit an access point to a city oil refinery. Three nearby homes were also damaged. Russia's military claimed to have intercepted 556 drones during the assault.
Sheremetyevo Airport, Russia's busiest hub serving Moscow, confirmed drone debris landed on its premises but assured operations remained unaffected. "Passenger terminals are calm, and services continue as normal," airport authorities stated.
Ukrainian retaliation and Russian strikes
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed retaliation for recent Russian attacks, including a deadly strike on Kyiv that killed 24 people earlier in the week. Zelensky announced Ukrainian forces had destroyed Russian military assets, including aircraft, a helicopter, and a cargo ship, while long-range drones targeted oil facilities and vessels inside Russia.
Kyiv maintains such strikes are justified, arguing energy sites fuel Russia's war effort. In recent months, Ukraine has escalated attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.
Russian attacks on Ukraine
Overnight, Russia launched over 30 drone and shelling attacks across four districts in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, injuring eight people, according to local official Oleksandr Hanzha. The regional capital, Dnipro, reported three injuries and multiple fires.
In Zaporizhzhia, a woman was injured in a separate drone strike Saturday evening. Ukraine's air force reported intercepting 279 of 287 Russian drones launched since late Saturday, though eight drones struck seven locations.
Broader conflict context
The latest exchanges follow Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with Moscow currently occupying roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory. Both sides have intensified long-range strikes in recent weeks, raising concerns over civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.
