Thirteen pupils die in minibus-lorry collision

Thirteen schoolchildren were killed when their minibus crashed into a lorry outside Johannesburg on Monday morning, authorities confirmed.

Crash details

The accident occurred at approximately 07:00 local time (05:00 GMT) in Vanderbijlpark, according to the Gauteng education department. Eleven children died at the scene, while two others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Two additional pupils remain in critical condition.

Investigation underway

Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo stated the minibus driver attempted to overtake two vehicles before colliding with the lorry. A culpable homicide case has been opened. The minibus driver is reportedly receiving medical treatment, while the lorry driver's status remains unclear.

Road safety concerns

South Africa's roads are notoriously dangerous, with factors like speeding, reckless driving, and poorly maintained vehicles contributing to frequent fatal crashes. In 2025, 11,418 people died in road accidents-a 6% decline from the previous year but still averaging 31 deaths daily.

Presidential response

President Cyril Ramaphosa called the incident "distressing" and emphasized the need for stricter safety measures. "Our children are the nation's most precious assets. We must enforce road rules and ensure safe transport for learners," he said.
