Intruder fined after entering pygmy hippo's pen

A Thai court has ordered a man to pay a $300 fine (10,000 baht) for illegally entering the enclosure of Moo Deng, an endangered baby pygmy hippo and social media star, zoo officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Incident details

The man breached Moo Deng's pen last month, as shown in footage released by local media. Videos captured him recording the young hippo with a tablet while inside the secured area.

Khao Kheow Open Zoo, located about two hours from Bangkok, reported that Moo Deng was unharmed but appeared "slightly startled" by the intrusion.

Zoo response and security changes

Narongwit Chodchoy, the zoo's director, told AFP the court ruling "sends a clear message that animals' rights must be respected, whether they are in captivity or the wild."

"We train our staff on handling animal escapes, but now we'll also prepare them for potential intruders. This won't happen again-to Moo Deng or any other animal here."

Following the incident, the zoo has increased security patrols around enclosures.

Moo Deng's rise to fame

Moo Deng, whose name translates to "bouncy pig," became an internet sensation in 2024 after the zoo shared videos of her playful behavior. Born in July that year, she quickly went viral, inspiring memes and a surge in zoo visitors.

Fans can purchase Moo Deng-themed merchandise, including clothing, reflecting her widespread popularity.

Broader implications

The case highlights growing concerns about wildlife protection amid rising social media-driven tourism. Authorities and conservationists emphasize the need for stricter enforcement to prevent similar incidents.
