Tesla submits plans for Reading logistics hub
Elon Musk's electric vehicle manufacturer has filed an application with Reading Borough Council to establish a combined service centre, bodyshop, and small showroom at the town's recently completed logistics park.
Facility details and proposed operations
The proposed site, located near Reading's International Business Park, would serve as a central hub for vehicle servicing, maintenance, and repairs. According to planning documents submitted by ELG Planning, the facility would also function as a delivery point for Tesla vehicles and include a showroom for existing customers to view new models while their cars are being serviced.
Council approval pending
The plans remain subject to approval by local authorities. If granted, the new centre would expand Tesla's presence in the region, following the opening of its first Reading dealership in 2023 on Basingstoke Road-a site previously occupied by a Peugeot dealer.
Tesla's growth and local expansion
Since launching its flagship Model S in the U.S. in 2012 and the U.K. in 2014, Tesla has become a dominant force in the electric vehicle market. The company, founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, has been led by CEO Elon Musk since 2008. Musk, who also heads SpaceX, has drawn both admiration and criticism for his public statements and business ventures, including his 2022 acquisition and rebranding of Twitter as X and his endorsement of Donald Trump in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
Next steps
Reading Borough Council will review Tesla's application in the coming weeks. If approved, the new facility would further solidify the company's footprint in the U.K. as demand for electric vehicles continues to grow.
