Backpack with cannabis and cash abandoned outside charity shop
Police in New Zealand have detained two 16-year-olds after a backpack containing marijuana and thousands of dollars in cash was accidentally left outside a charity store in Southland.
Discovery and initial response
A volunteer at the shop noticed a strong odor coming from a backpack left in the donation area on 18 February. Inside, they found 43.2 grams of cannabis and NZ$3,700 (approximately $2,200) in banknotes.
The teenagers had placed the bag outside while waiting for a vehicle to be serviced nearby. They later returned in distress, searching for the missing backpack.
Police investigation and findings
Following the arrest, officers searched the pair's vehicle and discovered an air pistol, a police scanner, and additional cash. While possession of a police scanner is not illegal in New Zealand, using it to intercept or act on police communications is a criminal offense.
Under New Zealand law, individuals under 18 must have a license and supervision to possess an air pistol.
Legal context and next steps
Recreational cannabis use and distribution remain illegal in New Zealand. In a 2020 referendum, voters narrowly rejected a proposal to legalize recreational marijuana.
Police have not disclosed details of potential charges or court appearances, citing strict rules around reporting cases involving minors in New Zealand's Youth Court.
"When the shop worker took the bag inside, they noticed that this particular donation had a distinctive pungent aroma. Once it was opened, it quickly emerged why."
