Teen's marathon swim saves stranded family
A 13-year-old boy swam four kilometres through choppy waters at dusk to alert rescuers after his mother and two younger siblings were swept offshore near Busselton, Western Australia, on Friday.
How the emergency unfolded
The family had been paddleboarding and kayaking in Geographe Bay when strong winds blew their inflatable vessels off course. The teenager attempted to paddle back to shore to call for help, but his kayak filled with water, forcing him to abandon it and swim the remaining distance.
Rescuers hail 'superhuman' effort
Paul Bresland, commander of the Naturaliste Volunteer Marine Rescue Group, described the boy's endurance as "superhuman." The teenager told rescuers he swam the first two hours wearing a life jacket before removing it to cover the final two hours.
"The bravery, strength and courage shown by this family were extraordinary, especially the young fella who swam 4 km to raise the alarm."

Search and rescue operation
The boy reached shore and raised the alarm at 18:00 local time (10:00 GMT), triggering a large-scale search. A rescue helicopter located his 47-year-old mother, 12-year-old brother, and eight-year-old sister clinging to a paddleboard approximately 14 km offshore around 20:30. A volunteer marine rescue vessel retrieved all three and brought them safely to shore.
Survival factors and aftermath
Western Australia Police Inspector James Bradley credited the family's life jackets for their survival and praised the teenager's actions as life-saving. "His determination and courage ultimately saved the lives of his mother and siblings," Bradley said.
Paramedics assessed the family at the scene before transporting them to a nearby hospital. They were later discharged and visited the marine rescue crew to express their gratitude, according to ABC News.
Safety reminder
Police used the incident to highlight how quickly ocean conditions can change, urging beachgoers to remain vigilant and wear appropriate safety gear.
