Tanzanian drug lord captured in Lusaka raid
Zambian authorities have detained Ahmed Muharram, a 40-year-old Tanzanian described as a notorious transnational drug trafficker, during coordinated operations in the capital Lusaka on Tuesday.
Large-scale drug haul uncovered
The Zambian Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) reported seizing a total of 1,380.8 kilograms of cannabis during the raids. The operation began with the discovery of 221.2 kilograms concealed in a lorry in Lusaka's Lilayi district.
Investigators later searched Muharram's residence in the same area, where they found an additional 1,159.6 kilograms of what the DEC described as "high-grade" cannabis.
Suspected accomplice also detained
A Zambian national, believed to be part of the organized trafficking network, was arrested alongside Muharram. Neither suspect has publicly commented on the charges.
The DEC stated that all detained individuals remain in lawful custody and will face court proceedings in the coming days.
Zambia's ongoing battle against drug trafficking
Zambia continues to grapple with drug abuse and trafficking, particularly involving cannabis and heroin. Under local law, marijuana is classified as a dangerous substance, and its possession, use, or distribution carries penalties including fines or imprisonment.
The DEC emphasized its commitment to preventing Zambia from being used as either a transit route or destination for illegal drugs. The agency credited intelligence-led operations for the successful arrests.
Muharram's long-standing criminal profile
According to the DEC, Muharram had been on the agency's watchlist for an extended period. The suspect is accused of operating across borders, though no further details about his alleged network were provided.
