Taiwan asserts sovereign status amid US-China tensions
Taiwan has reiterated its position as a sovereign, independent nation following remarks by US President Donald Trump, who cautioned against a formal declaration of independence from China. The statement comes as geopolitical tensions in the region remain high, with Beijing asserting its claim over the self-governing island.
Trump's stance after Beijing summit
After a two-day summit in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump stated he had made no commitments regarding Taiwan's status. He emphasized that the US does not seek conflict with China, telling Fox News, "I'm not looking to have somebody go independent."
Trump also revealed that he and Xi discussed Taiwan extensively during their meetings. "He feels very strongly about the island and doesn't want to see a movement for independence," he said, adding that he would soon decide on an $11 billion arms sale package to Taiwan.
Taiwan's response and regional dynamics
Taiwanese presidential spokesperson Karen Kuo responded on Saturday, stating it was "self-evident" that Taiwan is "a sovereign, independent democratic country." However, she emphasized Taiwan's commitment to maintaining the status quo, avoiding both formal independence and unification with China.
President Lai Ching-te has previously argued that Taiwan does not need to declare independence, as it already operates as a sovereign nation. Despite this, Beijing has labeled Lai a "troublemaker" and accused him of undermining cross-strait peace.

The US is legally required to provide Taiwan with defensive capabilities but has historically balanced this obligation with its diplomatic ties to China. Trump reiterated that US policy on Taiwan remains unchanged, though he avoided clarifying whether the US would defend the island militarily.
China has intensified military drills near Taiwan in recent years, escalating regional tensions. Trump acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue, stating, "I want them to cool down. I want China to cool down."

Trump indicated that the proposed $11 billion arms package would be discussed with Taiwan's leadership, though he avoided direct communication with President Lai, citing diplomatic protocol.
