Hundreds gather for memorial service in Crans-Montana
Residents of the Swiss Alpine town of Crans-Montana attended a solemn Sunday Mass at St Christopher's Church to honor those killed in a devastating fire at the Le Constellation bar on New Year's Eve. The tragedy claimed 40 lives, with many victims still unidentified due to severe burns.
Families receive devastating news
All 40 victims have now been formally identified through DNA analysis and dental records, though their names remain undisclosed. Forensic teams worked tirelessly to confirm identities as families endured an agonizing wait. Among them was Laetitia Brodard, who had spent days posting photographs of her missing teenage son, Arthur, online. She confirmed his death at the memorial service, later sharing on Facebook that he had "gone to party in paradise."
Survivors recount horrific scenes
Teenagers who escaped the blaze described chaotic and traumatic moments as flames engulfed the crowded bar. Many initially failed to grasp the severity of the situation, continuing to dance or film the fire instead of fleeing. Some attempted to smother the flames with their clothing, but the fire spread rapidly through soundproofing foam on the ceiling.
After the service, a silent procession moved toward the bar, where a growing memorial of flowers, stuffed toys, and handwritten notes now stands. The site remains cordoned off behind white plastic sheeting.
Firefighters hailed as heroes
Emergency responders received a standing ovation as they arrived at the memorial, many visibly overcome with emotion. Fire commander David Vocat, who considered resigning after the tragedy, described his team as a "giant family" united in grief. Criminal investigation underway
Authorities have launched an inquiry into the fire, focusing on potential negligence by the bar's owners, a French couple. Prosecutors are reviewing footage that appears to show staff carrying sparkler-adorned champagne bottles moments before the blaze ignited. Investigators will assess whether the soundproofing foam and other materials complied with safety regulations, as well as the adequacy of emergency exits and fire extinguishers.
Questions also surround the bar's capacity, as it was reportedly packed with young patrons, many under the legal drinking age of 16. Some survivors described overcrowding and confusion as the fire spread.
Community seeks justice and healing
A group of men, some with their faces obscured by scarves, gathered to pay tribute to a bouncer known as Stefi, who died in the fire. "We're here for our colleague," one said, choking back tears. "Stefi has taken his final path. May he now rest in peace."
Diana, who prayed with friends for hospitalized victims, echoed the community's resolve. "We are not angry," she said. "But we believe the police will do their work well, and we hope there is justice."
