Four-year-old vanishes from remote sheep station
Police have named a suspect in the disappearance of Gus Lamont, a four-year-old boy who went missing from his family's remote property near Yunta, South Australia, on 27 September 2025.
Gus was last seen playing outside the Oak Park station homestead, approximately 300 km northeast of Adelaide. His grandmother briefly left him unattended for around 30 minutes before discovering he was gone, triggering one of the state's largest search operations.
Massive search yields no clues
Over the following weeks, authorities scoured roughly 470 square kilometres-an area twice the size of Edinburgh-using ground teams and aircraft. Despite the scale of the effort, no trace of Gus was found. By late October, the search was scaled back, and a dedicated 12-member taskforce took over the investigation.
Inconsistencies lead to suspect
The taskforce reviewed statements from family members and uncovered "a number of inconsistencies and discrepancies" in the timeline of Gus's disappearance, according to Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke.
As a result, a resident of Oak Park station has since stopped cooperating with police. Fielke emphasised that Gus's parents are not under investigation.
"A person who resides at Oak Park station has withdrawn their support for the police and is no longer cooperating with us."

Evidence seized in January search
In January 2026, police conducted a search of the property, confiscating several items, including a vehicle, a motorcycle, and electronic devices. Investigators have not disclosed whether any of the seized material has provided leads.
Three theories initially explored
Police initially considered three possible scenarios: Gus wandered off, he was abducted, or someone familiar to him was involved in his disappearance. Due to the property's isolation, abduction was quickly ruled out. There was also no evidence to suggest Gus had simply strayed from the homestead.
Fielke confirmed the investigation remains active, with authorities treating the case as a suspected death. "We'll continue to thoroughly and meticulously investigate the disappearance of Gus until we get an outcome," he said.
Parents not under suspicion
Fielke reiterated that Gus's parents are not considered suspects. "We're all focused and determined to locate Gus and return him to his parents. Nothing is off the table as we work towards that outcome," he added.
