Fatality reported amid severe weather
A man died near Athens early Thursday after Storm Erminio battered parts of Greece with gale-force winds and flooding, authorities confirmed. The victim was found trapped beneath a car in the rural area of Nea Makri, according to the fire department.
Storm impact across Greece
Heavy rainfall and strong winds have caused widespread disruption, flooding streets and forcing school closures. Ferries remained docked in ports due to hazardous conditions, though Greek media reported some departures might resume later Thursday if weather improves.
In Nea Makri, floodwaters inundated streets and the basement of the local police station. On the island of Poros, a bridge collapsed, and vehicles were reportedly swept away by rising waters.
Emergency response
The fire department handled 674 calls for assistance between Wednesday and early Thursday, primarily in the Attica region surrounding Athens. Most incidents involved fallen trees blocking roads or damaging property.
Dust storm engulfs Crete
Separately, a Saharan dust storm blanketed Crete on Wednesday, turning skies a reddish-orange hue and disrupting flights. Authorities issued a red warning for western and southern parts of the island, effective from midday until late Thursday evening.
Forecast: Persistent severe weather
The national meteorological service warned of continued hazardous conditions across most of Greece on Thursday, including prolonged heavy rain, thunderstorms, and potential hail. Residents were advised to remain cautious as the storm system lingers.
