Starship launch postponed to Friday
SpaceX has pushed back the test flight of its Starship V3 rocket to Friday after identifying a technical issue with the launch tower, CEO Elon Musk announced on Thursday.
Technical snag causes delay
Musk revealed on social media that a faulty hydraulic pin on the launch tower prompted the postponement. He stated that if repairs are completed overnight, the next attempt will proceed at 5:30 CT (22:30 GMT).
Starship's significance for SpaceX's IPO
The delayed launch comes as SpaceX prepares for what could become the largest initial public offering (IPO) in Wall Street history. The company plans to list on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol SPCX, potentially as early as next month.
A successful Starship test flight could bolster investor confidence ahead of the IPO. SpaceX's filing describes the rocket as "the most powerful launch system ever developed," capable of carrying 100 metric tons, with future versions aiming to double that capacity.
Financial stakes and Musk's fortune
SpaceX's valuation stands at $1.25 trillion, with Musk holding a majority stake that could exceed $600 billion in value. If the IPO proceeds, Musk-already the world's richest individual-could become the first person with a net worth surpassing $1 trillion.
The company reported $18.6 billion in revenue last year but posted a net loss of $4.9 billion. In the first quarter of 2026, it generated $4.7 billion in sales while incurring a $4.3 billion loss.
Starship's role in SpaceX's ambitions
The Starship V3 rocket, designed for rapid satellite launches and NASA lunar missions, incorporates dozens of upgrades. SpaceX has invested over $15 billion in the program, according to its IPO filing.
Beyond rocket development, SpaceX operates Starlink, a satellite internet service, and owns xAI, a controversial artificial intelligence firm.
What's next
SpaceX will attempt the uncrewed test flight on Friday, pending resolution of the hydraulic issue. The outcome could influence investor sentiment ahead of the highly anticipated IPO.
