Disqualification at Milan-Cortina Games

Two South Korean cross-country skiers were removed from the women's classic sprint qualification round after their skis tested positive for a prohibited substance, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Banned substance detected

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) reported that Han Dasom and Lee Eui-jin violated competition rules when fluorinated wax was found on their equipment. The chemical, known as fluor, has been banned since the 2023-24 season due to performance-enhancing properties.

Why fluorinated wax is prohibited

Originally developed for sailboats to improve glide, fluorinated wax entered skiing in the 1980s. While it repels water and reduces friction, it poses environmental and health risks. Classified as a "forever chemical," it does not break down naturally and has been linked to various illnesses.

Impact on the competition

Ranked 157th and 158th in the World Cup standings, neither Han nor Lee were considered medal contenders. Their disqualification had no effect on the overall race for podium positions in the women's sprint event.

FIS statement

"The use of fluorinated wax provides an unfair competitive advantage and is therefore prohibited under our regulations."
