Detention of Jonathan Andic in renewed investigation

Jonathan Andic, the 45-year-old son of fashion magnate Isak Andic, was arrested by Catalan police on Tuesday as part of a reopened inquiry into his father's death. The case, initially ruled an accident, was revisited after inconsistencies emerged in testimony.

Circumstances of Isak Andic's death

Isak Andic, 71, died in December 2024 after falling from a ravine while hiking in the Montserrat mountains near Barcelona. His son Jonathan was with him at the time, though reports conflict over whether other family members were present. The death was first classified as accidental but later became the subject of a criminal probe.

Jonathan Andic's role and legal status

Jonathan, who joined Mango in 2005 and later led the company's Mango Man division, was named vice-chairman of the board following his father's death. He has consistently denied any involvement in the incident.

On Tuesday, police took him from his home shortly after 11:00 local time (09:00 GMT) for further questioning. A judge later ordered his detention on bail set at €1 million (£865,000), revoked his passport, and mandated weekly court appearances.

Family response and company impact

A spokesperson for the Andic family told Reuters that Jonathan was cooperating with authorities and that the family remained confident in his innocence.

"All of us are, in some way, his legacy and the testimony of his achievements. It is up to us... to ensure that Mango continues to be the project that Isak aspired to."

Background of the case

Catalan investigators initially closed the case in early 2025, citing no evidence of foul play. However, the probe was reopened later that year after La Vanguardia reported discrepancies in Jonathan's statements.

Isak Andic, born in Turkey, co-founded Mango with his brother Nahman in Barcelona in 1984. The brand now operates nearly 3,000 stores across 120 countries. At the time of his death, Forbes estimated his net worth at $4.5 billion (£3.6 billion).
