Somalia set to launch historic offshore drilling

Somalia is poised to begin its first offshore oil drilling operations this week, as a Turkish-owned drilling ship arrives in its territorial waters on Friday.

Petroleum Minister Dahir Shire called the development a "historic milestone" in the country's energy sector, marking the start of a new phase in offshore exploration.

Turkish vessel to lead drilling efforts

The Turkish Petroleum Corporation's drilling ship, Çağrı Bey, will conduct deep-water drilling at sites identified during seismic surveys last year. The vessel, on its first international mission, will operate in Somalia's waters in the Arabian Sea.

Shire stated that the initiative reflects Somalia's readiness to explore its most promising offshore prospects, with hopes that successful drilling will unlock significant oil reserves.

Economic and diplomatic implications

Officials say the project could bolster Somalia's economic recovery and strengthen its position as a regional energy player. Foreign Minister Ali Omar described the campaign as a reinforcement of Turkey's role as a "trusted long-term partner" in Somalia's development.

Turkey's Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, speaking ahead of a visit to Somalia, suggested that any oil or gas discoveries would deliver substantial economic benefits to Somalia, East Africa, and Turkey.

Decades of instability delayed exploration

While researchers estimate Somalia holds billions of barrels of oil, exploration has been hindered by prolonged conflict and political instability. Turkey has deepened its engagement with Somalia over the past decade, including military cooperation and investments.

Ankara operates a major military base in Somalia, established in 2017, as part of its broader regional strategy.

Next steps and national goals

Shire emphasized that the government will ensure the benefits of oil drilling contribute to national prosperity and improve living standards for Somalis. The success of the initial drilling phase will determine the timeline for further exploration and potential production.

"A new chapter begins in our offshore energy journey."

Dahir Shire, Somalia's Petroleum Minister
