Stabbing incident leaves six injured at Foss High School
Six individuals, including five students and a security guard, were hospitalized after a stabbing at Foss High School in Tacoma, Washington, on Thursday afternoon. Police confirmed all victims are in stable condition.
Suspect in custody, faces multiple assault charges
A student at the school was detained following the incident and has been charged with five counts of first-degree assault, according to Shelbie Boyd, a spokesperson for the Tacoma Police Department. The suspect also sustained minor injuries.
Timeline of the attack
Emergency services responded to reports of an active assault at the school at 1:35 p.m. local time (9:35 p.m. BST). The Tacoma Fire Department treated and transported six patients to nearby hospitals. Initially, four students were reported in critical condition, while one adult and the suspect had minor injuries.
By 4:00 p.m. local time, authorities confirmed that all hospitalized individuals were in stable condition.
Investigation ongoing, school closed Friday
Boyd stated that the incident stemmed from an altercation but did not provide further details. Police arrived quickly and secured the scene, though the investigation is expected to continue through the night. Authorities have urged anyone with video footage of the incident to come forward.
Foss High School will remain closed on Friday, with plans to reopen on Monday, May 4. Counselors will be available on-site to support students and staff.
Past violence at the school
The incident recalls a tragic event in 2007, when 17-year-old Samnang Kok was fatally shot in a hallway at Foss High School. The shooter, 18-year-old Douglas Chanthabouly, was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 23 years in prison.
"The investigation will carry on into the night. We urge anyone with video of the incident to contact police," Boyd said.
