Six killed in Kyiv shooting rampage
At least six people died and 14 were injured on Saturday when a gunman opened fire in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district before taking hostages in a supermarket, Ukrainian authorities reported.
Attack unfolds in southern Kyiv
The assailant, identified as a 58-year-old Moscow native, began firing on pedestrians in the street before seizing hostages inside a nearby supermarket, according to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. Police engaged the shooter in a 40-minute standoff, during which negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation.
Klymenko described the attacker as "acting chaotically" and said he refused offers to provide medical aid to an injured hostage. The standoff ended when police stormed the supermarket after the gunman killed one of the hostages. Four others were freed unharmed.
Victims include child, bystander
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that four people were fatally shot on the street, while a woman in her 30s later died in hospital. A 12-year-old boy was among the 14 injured. The sixth victim was the hostage killed inside the supermarket.
Shooter's background under investigation
Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko stated the attacker had lived in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, much of which remains under Russian occupation, for an extended period. Zelensky added that the man set fire to his apartment before launching the attack.
Authorities confirmed the gunman used a legally registered automatic weapon. Investigators are now examining how the firearm permit was issued and the circumstances leading to the shooting.
Motive remains unclear
Klymenko said the attacker made no demands during negotiations and offered no explanation for his actions. While Kyiv has faced frequent attacks amid Russia's ongoing war, mass shootings of this nature are uncommon in the capital.
