Bollywood icons honored with London statue

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol revealed a new bronze statue in Leicester Square on Thursday, marking 30 years since the release of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, the beloved Bollywood classic that remains the longest-running film in Indian cinema history.

Lighthearted banter and marriage advice

When asked for marital wisdom during an interview with BBC News, Kajol playfully interrupted before Khan could respond. "All his films are about romance before marriage, not after," she quipped. Khan laughed in agreement, adding, "Until now, you were someone I could advise. After marriage, you're on your own."

Despite the jest, the 60-year-old superstar offered a glimpse of his philosophy. "You must have romance, you must sing songs," he said. Kajol chimed in, "And you must have watched DDLJ."

A cultural landmark in London

The statue, unveiled amid heavy rain, depicts Khan and Kajol in iconic poses from the film, which follows a cross-continental love story beginning at London's King's Cross station. Scenes from the movie were also shot in Leicester Square, making the location a fitting tribute.

The monument joins other literary and cinematic figures in the square's Scenes in the Square trail, including Harry Potter, Paddington, and Bridget Jones. Khan called the honor "very befitting," noting London's role in Bollywood's global rise. "England's audience has been instrumental in Indian cinema's modern takeoff," he said.

Fans and legacy

Hundreds of fans braved the weather to catch a glimpse of the stars, screaming and snapping photos as they arrived. Khan later joked about the statue, calling it "a life-size doll" and teasing Kajol, "I think I'm looking very handsome. You're also looking very pretty." She laughed, replying, "It's a second thought, but thanks."

Kajol described the experience as "amazing" and "a little unbelievable," while Khan said he was eager to show the statue to his three children.

Bollywood's evolving landscape

The Hindi film industry, which produces hundreds of movies annually, has faced challenges since the pandemic, with cinemas shuttered and audiences turning to streaming platforms. Kajol attributed the slowdown to increased competition. "People now have a choice-cinema or streaming. That makes decisions harder," she said. Khan remained optimistic, emphasizing the enduring appeal of communal viewing. "We like to enjoy things together," he added.

From actor to billionaire mogul

Khan, often dubbed Bollywood's "King of Romance" or "King Khan," recently joined the billionaire ranks, according to a 2025 wealth list. His empire spans acting, production (via his company Red Chillies Entertainment), and ownership of the Kolkata Knight Riders cricket team.

After a four-year hiatus, Khan returned to the screen in 2023 and has teased his upcoming action film, King. When asked about a potential James Bond role, he deadpanned, "No. I don't have the accent. And I don't like shaken martinis."

Industry pride and global recognition

Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films (the studio behind DDLJ), called the statue a "huge moment of pride," noting the film's cultural impact alongside Hollywood icons like Harry Potter and Mary Poppins. Ros Morgan, chief executive of the Heart of London Business Alliance, echoed the sentiment, praising DDLJ as a "cinematic phenomenon that has shaped generations."
