Infant fatally shot in Brooklyn pushchair
New York City police confirmed a seven-month-old girl died after being struck by gunfire while sitting in her pushchair in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Wednesday afternoon. Authorities suspect the shooting was gang-related and unintentional.
Shooting details emerge
Surveillance footage shows two men riding a motorbike against traffic when the passenger fired at least two shots, according to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. The bike later crashed, and the suspected shooter was detained, though a manhunt continues for the driver.
The incident occurred around 1:21 p.m. local time (5:21 p.m. GMT) on a street corner where several adults and children, including two in pushchairs, were present. The victim's parents took cover in a nearby shop before realizing their daughter had been shot in the head.
Witnesses describe chaos
Bernius Maldonado, an eyewitness, told CBS News that children scrambled for cover as the family rushed into a store. The mother screamed upon discovering her baby bleeding from the head. Footage obtained by the New York Post captures the moment the mother notices the injury, becoming hysterical as she clutches her head in shock.
Victim pronounced dead at hospital
Emergency responders transported the infant to Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. No other fatalities or injuries were reported. The suspected shooter, injured in the crash, was taken to Brooklyn Hospital before being placed in police custody. Tisch noted he lost both shoes upon impact but was arrested on unrelated charges.
Officials react to tragedy
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the killing a "devastating reminder" of the city's ongoing struggle with gun violence. "A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant," he said.
"As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain that this family is feeling or the grief that they now carry with them. It is unspeakable."
Jessica Tisch, NYPD Commissioner
Investigation ongoing
Police continue to review footage and evidence but have not yet filed charges. Tisch stated the detained suspect matches the description of the shooter based on clothing and appearance, though his arrest stemmed from a separate case.
