Seven Bodyguards Arrested in Connection with Mayor's Assassination
Mexican authorities have detained seven bodyguards suspected of involvement in the killing of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, who was fatally shot on 1 November during a public Day of the Dead event, officials announced Friday.
The Michoacán state attorney general's office stated the guards were arrested for "probable participation in the crime of aggravated homicide, in commission by omission," implying failure to prevent the attack. The arrests follow Wednesday's capture of an alleged mastermind linked to a powerful cartel.
The Assassination
Manzo, 40, was attending a ceremony honoring deceased loved ones when a lone gunman opened fire, striking him seven times. Bystanders fled as chaos erupted. The suspect was later subdued and killed by Manzo's security team, according to reports.
The mayor, a vocal critic of cartel extortion targeting local avocado growers, had repeatedly called for stronger federal action against criminal groups. His death sparked widespread protests and scrutiny over security lapses.
Cartel Links and Broader Violence
Mexico's security minister blamed the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) for the murder. The CJNG, notorious for drug trafficking, kidnapping, and extortion, has frequently targeted officials resisting its influence.
The alleged mastermind, identified only as Jorge Amando, was arrested Wednesday. Michoacán remains a battleground for rival cartels vying for control of smuggling routes, fueling persistent violence.
Ongoing Investigation
State and federal forces, including the National Guard, led the bodyguards from a municipal building near the crime scene, the Associated Press reported. Authorities have not disclosed further details on the guards' alleged roles.
