Top British envoy in US departs abruptly
James Roscoe, the deputy to Britain's ambassador in Washington, has left his position with no official reason given, the UK Foreign Office confirmed on Wednesday.
Role and recent responsibilities
Roscoe served as the second-highest-ranking official at the British Embassy in the US capital, a post considered one of the most prominent in the UK diplomatic service. He temporarily led the embassy last year after Lord Peter Mandelson was dismissed, and was among those considered for the permanent role, which ultimately went to Sir Christian Turner.
His duties included coordinating President Donald Trump's state visit to Britain and assisting with King Charles III's recent trip to the United States.

Before his assignment in Washington, Roscoe was the UK's ambassador to the United Nations. He also served as communications director for Queen Elizabeth II and held the position of chief press secretary in Downing Street under Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
