Seahawks secure Super Bowl triumph with dominant defense

Seattle Seahawks crushed the New England Patriots 29-13 in Super Bowl 60, delivering a masterclass in defense at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The victory marks the franchise's second Super Bowl win, following their 2014 success.

The Dark Side rises

Seattle's defense, nicknamed 'the Dark Side,' lived up to its fearsome reputation, stifling the Patriots' offense throughout the game. The unit, orchestrated by defensive coordinator Aden Durde-the first international coach to win a Super Bowl-forced three turnovers, recorded six sacks, and scored a touchdown.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, who narrowly missed out on this season's MVP award, was overwhelmed by the Seahawks' relentless pressure. New England managed just four first downs and 52 total yards in the first half, with Maye sacked five times before the break.

Key moments turn the tide

Seattle led 9-0 at halftime, but the game's momentum shifted early in the fourth quarter. A turnover by Maye set up tight end AJ Barner for the Seahawks' first touchdown. Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu then intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for another score, extending Seattle's lead to 23-0.

Kicker Jason Meyers added to the Patriots' misery with a record five field goals, while running back Kenneth Walker III earned Super Bowl MVP honors after rushing for 135 yards-the first running back to achieve the feat since 1998.

Redemption and records

For Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, the victory was a personal redemption. Once derided for his struggles, including a infamous "I'm seeing ghosts" comment during a 2019 loss to the Patriots, Darnold silenced critics with his performance.

"We were the better team; we're the best team. We loved each other, we believed in each other, and now we're champions."

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald

Darnold praised the team's collective effort, particularly the defense, calling the journey "special."

Patriots fall short in comeback bid

The Patriots, making their first Super Bowl appearance since 2019, struggled to find rhythm. Despite a late touchdown to Mack Hollins and a consolation score by Rhamondre Stevenson, New England's offense was smothered by Seattle's defense.

Head coach Mike Vrabel, a former Patriots linebacker, had hoped to become the first to win a Super Bowl as both a player and coach for the same franchise. Quarterback Drake Maye, the league's leader in pass completion rate this season, was unable to overcome the Seahawks' relentless pass rush.

Historic night for Seahawks and Durde

The victory cements the Seahawks' place in NFL history, with their defense joining the legendary 'Legion of Boom'-the unit that powered their 2014 Super Bowl win. Aden Durde's achievement as the first overseas coach to win a Super Bowl added to the night's significance.

With a crowd of 70,823 overwhelmingly backing Seattle, the Seahawks celebrated a hard-fought triumph, proving their status as the NFL's best team this season.
